How to DIY Nails at home

You don’t need to take a trip to the salon to enjoy today’s hottest nail art trends. While you may want to seek out a professional for certain looks (especially if those looks include acrylics, gels, or other pro techniques), there are still tons of easy nail trends that you can do right at home with just a burst of creativity and a few simple tools.
We’re big fans of DIY nails — especially when it comes to helping people exceed their own expectations in creating something they didn’t think was possible. And, to help you take advantage of 2021’s trendiest nail art ideas without having to leave the house, we’ve outlined some need-to-know advice for making it happen. Let’s get to it.

How to Do DIY Nails

1. Follow the right steps

Think like a pro when doing your own nails and don’t just skip right to the polish without putting in some base work. Soak, trim, file, buff before painting, and keep your hands and cuticles well moisturized in between manis for best results.

2. Don’t skip the base or top coat

Base coat and top coat each play a major role in creating manicures that look great and stay put. (Hint: if you don’t want to splurge on both, you can use your top coat as a base coat too.)

3. Apply at least two coats of polish

The color of your polish will get more saturated the more layers you put on. As such, it’s recommended with any manicure that you use at least two coats of polish, plus a third if the color is still uneven or too light.

4. Don’t skimp on drying time

Not giving your nails enough time to dry is a major no-no. Give yourself at least 10 to 15 minutes to let them set, and check for any lingering tackiness before going on with your day. If you want, you can use a quick drying top coat to speed up the process.
